STRONG>INJUSTICE

On October 8, 2009 just before 3 PM, I decided to ask my English teacher Mrs. B. a few question regarding a few errors made by myself on my assigned short story. Previous to that event, all of the short stories were given back and we had approximately 10 minutes to look through it before watching the movie “The Yellow Paper.” I used those minutes to search on the teacher’s dictionary for the red marked words on my story to correct myself. After watching and comparing both the movie and the written version, I went to talk with Mrs. B. because I noticed that she had not understood some of my text and I felt the need to ask her about it. I wasn’t really interested on my mark, but on my mistakes; I believe that an individual learns with his/hers errors and tries to surpass it and succeed in life. Having searched the dictionary, I had some doubts and was hoping to have it cleared. After asking her roughly 4 questions, she became a bit annoyed with me and started pointing that she, as a teacher, was right and that I didn’t want to be proved wrong. I explained to her that if I were to be right in everything I wouldn’t be sitting in the student’s seat. The reply came loud and clear and as a total shock, since it was from a teacher. Mrs. B. said:

“C.M., you are being OBNOXIOUS and I want you to go home and think about it.”

This, silenced the whole class and deeply embarrassed I packed my things and left. Had I ever disrespected her before, that would be acceptable. On the contrary, I found myself being strongly dismissed and offended by the only certified teacher inside that classroom that could have either listened to my questions and tried to understand or politely send me away untruly promising to hear me out.

As she recommended, I went home and instead of thinking about my humanly mistakes, I ended up thinking of the injustice of my little case. I thought a lot and could not think of anything that could support her behaviour with me.

Coming from and living at a free country, I found myself studying in a class where you cannot have your own opinion without being placed on the ABOMINABLE seat. I always thought that the teacher has, as his/hers job, the right to analyse and mark as he/she wishes. Nevertheless, I also thought that students also had the right to inquire about any marked mistakes, even if it sounds ridiculous.

It would be much easier if we could all speak our minds without being stepped on!

As a record, it all started over the word PROCESSED being used as a substitute for PROCEEDED and I must assure you that after this incident I have searched over 25 websites and in fact, I can use the word if I mean to move along in or if in a procession: “The man in the panama hat offered his arm and... they processed into the dining room”(Anita Brookner)

Hopefully, I will be able to write again without fearing having incorrect/multiple meaning words on my papers and hopefully, I will have a lot in this one for the simple reason that I’M A HUMAN BEING THAT MAKES MISTAKES!
